A Village is Born
In the Beginning
Since it was founded in 1994, the Martin Luther King
School Dream Foundation helped an under funded school with
items like copiers, televisions, P.E. equipment,
whiteboards, books and many other items that help a school
function more easily. Continuing to support the school in
that manner, 1999 was the first year that the foundation
gave college scholarships to students who formerly
attended Martin Luther King for at least two years. Many
of them had Jan Lind-Sherman as a teacher, and all of them
needed financial help with their post secondary education.
Between then and 2010 over one hundred scholarships were
awarded, ranging from $l,000 to $3,500.
Career Dreaming
Everyone has dreams for the future. Board directors for
the Martin Luther King School Dream Foundation are united
in their desire to help underserved inner city students in
Seattle realize these dreams. The scholarships we provide
enable our young people, mostly minority, to get started
on their educational paths. We are unique in our
application qualifications and approach. Unlike many
scholarship requirements, the GPA is not as important as a
well written, thoughtful essay about each student's
challenges, hopes, and dreams. In addition, students can
use their awards for any post secondary education, not
just four-year colleges and universities.
Closing the School
The closing of Martin Luther King Elementary School in
2006 caused the Board of Directors to rethink the future
of the foundation. Believing in its mission, the board
decided two things. We will keep the commitment to former
King students until the last one has graduated high school
in 2017. At the same time we will explore how we can help
a greater number of Seattle area students who have similar
backgrounds and needs in years to come.
Scholarship Funding
While Jan Lind-Sherman and her husband, Vaughn Sherman,
were the founders and major contributors to the
foundation, other corporations, board members and
individuals from the community have contributed as well.
Now, as the foundation expands its outreach, more funds
will be necessary in order to meet the goal of a million
dollar endowment.
Building the Village
We often hear the phrase, "It takes a village to raise
a child." Nowhere can the "village" concept be more apt
than when deciding to help our children reach their
potential and fulfill their dreams. We hope you will join
our village. We will work together to make a difference in
the lives of underserved Seattle young people who might
not otherwise have a post secondary educational
opportunity.
Board of Directors 2010
"We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without
brightening our own."
